Mastectomy/Breast Surgery Rehabilitation
Following a diagnosis of breast cancer, women undergo many different procedures, including but not limited to: surgical breast biopsy, lymph node removal, breast conservation surgery (lumpectomy), mastectomy and breast reconstruction. All of these procedures can affect their shoulder range of motion and strength, and thus affect their ability in dressing, bathing, grooming, driving, reaching, etc. According to the American Physical Therapy Association, “researchers have found that women who received physical therapy regained normal Glenohumeral (shoulder) function 1 year after surgery and reported less pain, while an untreated control group continued to report limitations.”
Shore Points Physical Therapists are specially trained to evaluate each patient individually and work alongside their patient to develop goals and a care plan to address their needs.
